Why did Ellen Barkin take such a crazy role on “The New Normal”?
Sylvia Comstock, Tallahassee, Fla.
Barkin, 58, is enjoying the controversy surrounding the new NBC sitcom about a gay couple who arrange a surrogate pregnancy, believing the TV series “The New Normal” aspires to the high bar set by other groundbreaking shows like “All in the Family.” She says her TV character, the bickering, say-anything grandmother Jane Forrest, is not unlike her. “She is very opinionated, I am very opinionated; she has a big mouth, I have a big mouth; she always thinks she is right, I always think I am right,” says the New York City-born actress.
