I was watching “Trisha’s Southern Kitchen” and it is obvious that Trisha Yearwood has lost some weight. How much and how did she do it?
—Barbara Holland, Chandler, Ariz.

Yearwood, 48, lost 30 pounds over a four-month period—going from a size 14 to a size 10—and she says there is no mystery to it. She just ate less and moved more.

“I don’t have a secret,” says the Monticello, Ga.-born country music artist and Food Network star. “It’s a battle for me. Like everybody [who struggles with weight loss], you have that conversation, am I going to eat the cookie?”

Sometimes she does; sometimes she doesn’t. Yearwood, who is married to Country Music Hall of Famer Garth Brooks, 51, says it is important to occasionally indulge a guilty pleasure, because if you don’t, you’ll develop cravings. So she eats sensibly the majority of the time—low fat and low sugar with a lot more vegetables included in her meals. But she also makes sure to get on the treadmill or attend a Zumba class.

“I went to a class and I was immediately obsessed,” she says. “It gives you a false sense of confidence that you can actually dance, which I can’t, but now I think I can.”

Yearwood, who has written two cookbooks, “Home Cooking With Trisha Yearwood: Stories and Recipes to Share With Family and Friends” and “Georgia Cooking in an Oklahoma Kitchen: Recipes From My Family to Yours,” developed her interest in tasty food as a child.

“I took for granted while growing up, all of the many amazing foods I ate—fresh vegetables from our garden, grain-fed beef from our farm, and fresh eggs from our chickens,” she recalls. “When I moved away to college and tried my first can of vegetables, I was so disappointed in their taste. I didn’t realize how good I had had it!”
