Castro, 26, who finished in fourth place on the seventh season of “American Idol,” has been living his dream of supporting himself as a musician in the years since he was voted off the show.

Most recently, he made his acting debut in Up TV’s “The Perfect Summer,” playing a laid-back surf shop owner in the family-friendly story about a fatherless teen forced to move to a small town and adjust to all the problems that come with that.

And several of the dreadlocked singer’s songs are featured in the TV movie.

“It is safe to say the movie was in part inspired by my songs,” says the Dallas, Texas-born Castro. “The movie came to be through some conversations with my record label, the network and producer, talking about a way to partner up. My name came up and we decided to give it a shot, so a lot of my songs inspired the script.”

Even though Castro had never had an acting lesson in his life, he was happy to give it a shot because the character was similar to whom he is in real life. He says, “It was amazing. I never wanted to be an actor. I always say I have a hard time trying to be myself, much less somebody else. It was intimidating to me.”

Recently, Castro’s focus has been on Christian music. His third studio album is “Only a Mountain,” with the recently released “Rise to You” single. The songs are about his life, but also incorporate his faith.

“My first album was a bunch of love songs which was great, but that was just one side of me. It is neat now to not have anything that is off limits. I am just able to be myself,” he says.

On the personal side, Castro married Mandy Mayhall, a friend from high school. The couple has a 2-year-old daughter, Madeline.
