Penny Kemp, Billings, Mont.

Born in Mound, Minn., LaVerne, Maxene and Patty Andrews grew up to record more than 700 songs, sell some 90 million records and become one of the most successful female vocal groups of all time. During World War II, the trio entertained Allied troops in the United States, Europe and Africa, and were known as the “Sweethearts of the Armed Forces Radio Service.” They appeared in more than a dozen films and had more than 40 Top 10 hit singles, including “Beer Barrel Polka (Roll Out the Barrel),” “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy,” “(I’ll Be With You) In Apple Blossom Time,” “Rum and Coca-Cola” and “I Can Dream, Can’t I?” LaVerne died of cancer in 1967, and Maxene died of a heart attack in 1995. Patty, 92, lives a quiet life with her husband in California.
