Born Marion Pauline Levy in Queens, N.Y., Goddard became a Ziegfeld showgirl as a teenager in the mid-1920s and made her first big film with Charlie Chaplin in Modern Times in 1936. She became a major Paramount star in the 1940s in movies including The Women, The Great Dictator, So Proudly We Hail, Kitty and Reap the Wild Wind. Among her four husbands were Chaplin, actor Burgess Meredith and author Erich Maria Remarque. Goddard died at 79 in 1990 in Switzerland and left more than $20 million to New York University.
