The redheaded star of vaudeville, radio, film and TV was born Richard Bernard Skelton in Vincennes, Ind., and made more than 30 films between 1938 and 1965, including “Whistling in the Dark,” “A Southern Yankee,” “The Yellow Cab Man” and “Texas Carnival.” The comedian who created the silly characters as Freddie the Freeloader, Junior the Mean Widdle Kid and Clem Kadiddlehopper on his “Red Skelton Show” (1951-1971), Skelton died of pneumonia in 1997 at age 84. His famous sign-off: “Good night, and may God bless.”
