Space flight pioneer Robert R. Gilruth (1913-2000) oversaw the development of the Mercury spacecraft and led the Manned Space Center, which later was renamed for President Lyndon B. Johnson, at Houston during the Gemini and Apollo projects. He was born in Nashwauk (pop. 935).
