The Brady Law Requires Background Checks for Handgun Purchases

Centralia (pop. 14,136) native James S. Brady was serving as White House press secretary for President Ronald Reagan in 1981 when he was shot during an attempted presidential assassination. The Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act, or Brady Law, is named for him and requires federally licensed firearm dealers to refer gun buyers to law enforcement for background checks.
