Using narration and historical re-creations with a mostly unknown cast of actors, the History channel’s sprawling eight-hour mini-series dramatizes America’s post-Civil War rise to economic and technological superpower by way of five specific dreamers and do-ers: the industrialists, philanthropists, innovators, and magnates Andrew Carnegie, J.P. Morgan, Henry Ford, John D. Rockefeller and Cornelius Vanderbilt. As the show’s tagline suggests, “America wasn’t discovered. It was built.” Both three-disc sets include multiple special behind-the-scenes documentary features.
