For Christmas tree decorations, homemade usually trumps store- bought—if not for the artistry, then for the personal touch. Ashlee Park, 33, of Fuquay-Varina, N.C., was inspired by vintage bell jars to upcycle plastic wine glasses (for as cheap as 35 cents apiece).

“I’ve made dozens of these, with kids and for classes,” says Park, who blogs at Mysocalledcraftylife.com. “Once you have the base and the wine glass, you can put whatever you want inside it. I’ve even stuck old family photographs in there.”

She snips off the wine glass stem, glues on a hanger, and creates miniature scenes using figurines she buys at flea markets. Then she attaches a base to the glass.

“Things they sell as cupcake toppers also are a good size,” she says. “You can personalize what you put inside for who you’re giving it to.”
