What is the Castle Doctrine?

The phrase “a man’s home is his castle” has its origin in English common law. In the United States, “castle doctrine” laws refer to a homeowner’s right to protect his residence by using reasonable force, even deadly, without any duty to retreat from the attacker. Such laws vary from state to state.
