It is Sophie Lowe, a relative newcomer to acting, who is taking us down the rabbit hole in “Once Upon a Time in Wonderland.” Born in Sheffield, England, her family relocated to Australia when she was 10. It was there, she began her initial career as a teen model. But, while attending the McDonald College of Performing Arts in Sydney, she first switched to dancing, before finally deciding that acting was her true calling.

“You know, you have these dreams about things and, for them to actually come true is very surreal and exciting, isn’t it? I’m living the dream,” she says of her burgeoning acting career.

The 23-year-old continued to develop her craft during her first roles in film, including “Road Kill,” “Autumn Blood” and “The Clinic.” She landed her first lead role as Kate in “Beautiful Kate,” for which she was nominated for an AFI Award (2009) for Best Lead Actress. Most recently, she starred in “Adore.”

In addition, Lowe received critical acclaim for her work in the film “Blame,” which was screened at the Cannes Film Festival, the Melbourne International Film Festival, the 35th Toronto International Film Festival and the 47th Chicago International Film Festival.

Lowe is delighted to take on the role of Alice in “Once Upon a Time in Wonderland, because she was very familiar with the book “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland,” her mother having read it to her as a child. But she did brush up by watching a few Alice movies and she looked up some illustrations to get her own take on how to bring Alice to life.

“I’m trying to make it mine,” she says. “She’s such a woman. I feel like that’s what I’m becoming, as well. So, I’m trying to use my own experiences within Alice, because we’re growing up together, I feel like. But she’s very strong and I can’t really fight like she can. I’m just pretending. But she inspires me, as a person. I hope she inspires a lot of people.”
