What other things did Alan Hale Jr., Skipper on TV's Gilligan's Island, appear in?
—Betty Weddington, Maiden, N.C.
Hale, the son of actor Alan Hale, appeared in dozens of films from the early 1940s into the 1970s, mostly playing cowboys, college boys or soldiers. Among his movie credits are Up Periscope, The West Point Story and Hang 'Em High. He starred in two 1950s TV series, Biff Baker, U.S.A. and Casey Jones, and was a guest on dozens of other shows. The actor really was a "skipper" of sorts, serving in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II. After his death in 1990 of cancer of the thymus at age 68, his ashes were scattered at sea.
