Outside the Barstow (pop. 22,639) Fire Department, a giant fire helmet commemorates the lives of New York City firemen killed on Sept. 11, 2001. The larger-than-life helmet bears the initials FDNY and 343, the number of members of the New York City Fire Department who died in the collapse of the World Trade Center towers after the terrorist attacks.
