Football Battle of the Golden Egg

Since 1901, in-state rivals Mississippi State University at Starkville (pop. 21,869) and the University of Mississippi at Oxford (pop. 11,756) have battled on the football field. Since 1927, the game has been known as the Battle of the Golden Egg or The Egg Bowl because of the egg-shaped football trophy presented to the winner.
