Billy Campbell was great as the city councilman running for mayor on AMC's The Killing. Is it true he took a year off from his acting career to sail on a ship?

Yes, but it happened about five years ago near the end of his stint on TV's The 4400.
Growing up in Charlottesville, Va., Campbell had always wanted to sail on ships. He began training in Scandinavia and hooked up with a Canadian vessel. Campbell, now 52, says, "I was very fortunate to be able to take a break to sail around the world for 14 months on The Picton Castle."
But it was more than just fun. "We do take medical supplies, educational supplies, plus a doctor [to some of the less-traveled to ports of call, such as Pitcairn Island]," says the former Once and Again star. "But primarily it's about sail training and about people learning to be at sea, which is mostly where I like to be."
Campbell's character, Darren Richmond, was arrested for murder in the season finale of The Killing, but then it turned out that the strongest piece of evidence against him was faked. The series has been picked up for a second season.
