Born Charles Gebhart in Vincennes, Ind., the silver-screen cowboy star died at 50 of injuries suffered in the deadliest nightclub fire in American history. The inferno at Boston’s Cocoanut Grove nightclub on Nov. 28, 1942, killed 492 people and injured hundreds of others. Jones worked in more than 160 films, most of them Westerns, between 1917 and 1942.
