What can you tell me of David Bromstad of Color Splash?
—Burl Summers, Ada, Okla.
Bromstad, 38, launched his career with HGTV by winning the first season of HGTV Design Star, on which he now serves as a mentor. In addition to Color Splash, he has also appeared on HGTV’d, in which a HGTV star travels across America in an 18-wheeler, surprising fans with visually stunning room designs.
“My style is always evolving as I find inspiration in my surroundings,” says Bromstad, who was born in Cokato, Minn., and grew up loving “French country” polka dots, bright colors and patterns.
“I push myself as a designer and am constantly doing research and being educated by my clients,” he says.
One of Bromstad’s early inspirations—and possibly one reason why he is so adept at color—was Walt Disney, who he credits for his interest in attending art school. “I wanted to be a Disney animator,” he says.
“I was obsessed with anything Disney. Shortly after I was in art school, I took an animation elective and realized that it just wasn’t for me.”
The art school he attended was the Ringling College of Art and Design in Sarasota, Fla. After graduation, he supported himself creating paintings for hotels, working for other interior designers and making props for children’s rooms.
In addition to continuing his Color Splash series for HGTV, Bromstad is developing a bedding and bath collection. Having a product line is something he has always wanted to do and he is hoping it will be in retail stories by late 2012, early 2013.
