What happened to popular singer Deanna Durbin, who made movies in the 1930s and 1940s when I was a teenager?
—Judy Forst, Central Point, Ore.
The Canadian-born singer-actress, now 88, made about 20 films from 1936 to 1948, mostly musicals. But while reigning as one of the highest paid and most popular stars of the silver screen, she decided she had had enough. She retired in 1948 and moved in 1950 with her third husband to a farmhouse outside of Paris, where they raised a daughter and son. Now widowed, she continues to enjoy what she once called "the life of nobody."
