What can you tell me about trainer Chris Powell from Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition?
—Rudy Salazar, Flagstaff, Ariz.

Powell, 33, was a natural to become the trainer for the ABC weight-loss series after he helped David Smith lose 401 pounds in 26 months. You may have seen the story on The Oprah Winfrey Show.

But more than that, the Phoenix, Ariz.–based fitness expert knows firsthand what it’s like to struggle with body image. At 14, Powell was the smallest kid in school, causing his parents to purchase a set of weights.

“I started using them and felt empowered,” he recalls. “There was no turning back, and it has fueled me ever since.”

To stay in shape, Powell trains on average four days a week and practices carb cycling, which is a series of high and low-carb days. The Arizona State graduate, who holds a degree in exercise science, says, “It’s great, because if you can’t have it one day, you can always have it tomorrow.”

He is compiling his weight-loss and fitness tips in a book, Choose To Lose: The 7-Day Carb-Cycle Solution, which is set for a fall release.
