What happened to Gary Lockwood, who starred as astronaut Frank Poole in “2001: A Space Odyssey,” and what else did he do?
—Jason Brandon, Amarillo, Texas
Lockwood, 75, a native of Van Nuys, Calif., is retired but appears at sci-fi conventions where he often hobnobs with NASA astronauts. He starred in Gene Roddenberry’s first TV series, “The Lieutenant” (1963-1964), newly released on DVD, about a young and easygoing U.S. Marine, and in the pilot episode of “Star Trek.” About 1968’s “2001,” he says, “When I got the job, my first line to my agent was, ‘How much are we having to pay them?’” The actor, who began his career as a stuntman, also appeared in the films “Splendor in the Grass,” “Wild in the Country,” “It Happened at the World’s Fair” and “Firecreek.”
