Born Ira Grossel in Brooklyn, New York, Chandler was one of the most popular film stars of the 1950s. After serving in World War II, he began his career in radio before earning an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of Cochise in “Broken Arrow.” That began his career as a leading man in “Foxfire,” “Away All Boats,” “Return to Peyton Place,” “Man in the Shadow” and “A Stranger in My Arms.” He died in 1961 at age 42 from blood poisoning after routine spinal surgery for a slipped disc.
