What can you tell me about John Barrowman, who plays Capt. Jack Harkness in the TV series Torchwood: Miracle Day?
—Rhonda Miller, Astoria, Ore.

Barrowman, 44, was born in Glasgow, Scotland, but moved to Aurora, Ill., with his family when he was 9. He studied performing arts at the United States International University in San Diego, Calif., and launched his career in the U.K. in a West End revival of Cole Porter’s Anything Goes.

But it was landing the recurring role as Jack Harkness in the BBC's Doctor Who that made him an international star. His American TV credits include roles on Desperate Housewives, Central Park West and Titans.

When not filming Torchwood, Barrowman works in musical theater on both Broadway and in London's West End. His theater credits include La Cage Aux Folles, Matador, Miss Saigon, The Phantom of the Opera and Sunset Boulevard.

Of his success, he says, “I really wish I could say that I had some big game plan—that all this was down to good management and foresight—but I didn’t. It was about self-belief—asking myself why shouldn’t I go for roles that no one would have had me down for and an absolute refusal to be pigeonholed as just anything.”
