How did Johnny Depp get started in show business? Is it true that he moved out of the country?
—Ann R., Michigan

Though he achieved his fame and biggest success as an actor, Johnny Depp, 38, started out as a musician. As a teenager in Florida, he played with a number of different bands and eventually moved to Los Angeles with one of them to pursue a music career. He eventually met Nicolas Cage, who told him he should try acting and set up a meeting between Depp and his agent. It led to Depp's first movie role in A Nightmare on Elm Street. His big break came on the TV show, 21 Jump Street, which brought him millions of fans and the kind of teen heartthrob reputation that he came to loathe. When he left the series, he was very careful about the movies he chose to appear in, establishing himself as a serious actor in such films as Edward Scissorhands, What's Eating Gilbert Grape, and Benny and Joon. For the last three-and-a-half years, he has lived almost full-time in France with his girlfriend, French actress Vanessa Paradis, and their 3-year-old daughter, Lily Rose.
