Leona Irish, Sagle, Idaho

That was Johnny Western, now 77, who wrote the music and lyrics to the iconic 1957-1963 TV series starring Richard Boone. “The Ballad of Paladin,” which Western says “changed my life,” led to a contract with Columbia Records. Born in Two Harbors, Minn., the member of the Country Music Disc Jockey Hall of Fame and the Western Music Association Hall of Fame retired in 2010 after serving as a disc jockey in Wichita, Kan., for 24 years. He toured for 40 years with Johnny Cash and still performs at Western music events.
