What can you tell me about Josh Hutcherson from The Hunger Games?
—Audrey James, Beaufort, S.C.

Despite the fact that he is only 19, Hutcherson has been a working actor for 10 years, landing his first role in 2002 in a TV pilot that didn’t get picked up. Since then, he has amassed an impressive credit list that includes Detention, which he also executive produced, The Kids Are All Right, Bridge to Terabithia, Journey to the Center of the Earth, Zathura, Firehouse Dog and Journey 2: The Mysterious Island

Of his wide variety of roles, the Union, Ky.-born actor says, “One of the more important things to having a career as an actor is diversity and being able to play different types of characters. I want to keep acting all my life, so I think it is important to go do big box-office movies and then go do character roles.”

Hutcherson, whose favorite teen movies include Breakfast Club, Pretty in Pink and Donnie Darko, also stars in the not-yet-released Red Dawn and, of course, he is committed to return for The Hunger Games sequel Catching Fire. “I’ve never seen a character so close to me as a person,” Hutcherson says of his Hunger Games character Peeta Mellark. “His self-deprecating humor, his outlook on life, and the way he wants to stay true to who he is no matter what are all things I could really relate to from my own life. I was very into Peeta from the get-go.”

Hutcherson, who has a younger brother and several pets, is involved in the Straight But Not Narrow campaign and wears a green bracelet to bring attention to the cause. “It is an organization that my friend and I started about a bunch of straight guys coming out and talking about how it is cool to be gay or bi-sexual or transsexual,” he says. “Being whatever you want to be. It is most important to be you.”
