Q: Lauren Koslow looks so sophisticated on Days of Our Lives, but someone told she operates a farm on the side. Is that true?

—Janice Langley, Richmond, Va.

The Boston-born actress, 58, is definitely a diva on the daytime drama. But when she is away from work, she pulls her hair back in a ponytail, forgets makeup and gets her hands in the dirt.

Koslow and husband Nick Schillace (they met when he did her makeup at The Young and the Restless) own a 20-acre farm outside of Los Angeles, where they grow produce for their organic company, House of Green Stables. "We've had everything from tomatoes to squash to cucumbers to beans to watermelons," Koslow says.

"Now we just think of ourselves as 'the tomato place' because we're concentrating on growing heirloom organic."

While the focus may be on tomatoes to sell at the farmers' market that Schillace runs, the family also plants vegetables for their own use and has a small menagerie that includes chickens, horses, goats and peacocks.

"If I didn't have the farm life, I don't know how I could survive in the glamorous world, because that's ultimately a kind of empty world," says the mother of two. "Don't get me wrong. I love glamour and I love rock and roll, but I like to get home to the farm, too. Ultimately, one world has provided the other for me, and I am grateful."
