Lawrence (pop. 46,001) native Bill Blackbeard is credited with saving the American newspaper comic strip from the scrap heap by amassing the world’s most comprehensive comics collection. He helped edit The Smithsonian Collection of Newspaper Comics (1977), which contains images from his personal archives. Blackbeard died last year at age 84.
