Oh My Gods
Softcover, 348 pages ($15)

Not the same stuffy stuff that bored you in high school, this “modern retelling” puts some of the god-size myth-behaviors back into Zeus, Hercules, Achilles, Pandora, Prometheus, Apollo and all the other legendary figures from Greek and Roman mythology and folklore. Freeman, a university professor of the classics, opens up the doors of the pantheon to much of the juicy mayhem, madness, erotica and general ring-around-the-ruins disturbia that earlier, stodgier academic versions tended to sanitize or ignore, and he lays it out in a brisk narrative form that’s a heck of a lot more enjoyable and entertaining than most 11th grade textbooks.
