on March 13, 2011

The Olympic Torch for the 2010 Olympic Games passed briefly through Washington on its way to Vancouver. When the torch passed through the Peace Arch border crossing in Blaine (pop. 3,770), it marked the flame’s only stateside stop during its journey across Canada. During its brief moment in the United States, the torch was carried by skier Phil Mahre, of Yakima, who won medals at the 1980 Olympics at Lake Placid and the 1984 Olympics in Sarajevo.
