The father of the postage meter is Arthur Pitney, born in 1871 in Quincy (pop. 40,366), who received a patent in 1902 for the gadget. He and businessman Walter Bowes founded the Pitney-Bowes company, which in 1920 was granted an exclusive license to dispense postage.
