U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Salvatore Giunta, 25, of Hiawatha (pop. 6,480), is the first living service member to receive the Medal of Honorthe nation’s highest military decorationsince the Vietnam War. The White House announced in September that Giunta would be awarded the medal for his extraordinary valor in Afghanistan in 2007. After his squad was ambushed by insurgents and he was knocked down by gunfire, Giunta charged into intense enemyfire to recover fellow soldiers.
