Whatever happened to Sandra Dee? She was the heartthrob of my teenage days.
—Ed Stuebgen, Fritch, Texas
Dee, who had poor health most of her adult years, died of complications from kidney disease in 2005 at 63. Born Alexandra Zuck in Bayonne, N.J., she was a professional model while in grade school and began making movies as a teenager. One of her most memorable roles came with 1959’s Gidget, as she played a perky, tomboyish California teen who discovered the joys of boys and surfing. Among her other films were A Summer Place, Imitation of Life, two Tammy movies and three films with pop singer Bobby Darin, to whom she was married from 1960 to 1967.
