Are the Krofft brothers of H.R. Pufnstuf fame still around?
—Lelonda Smith, North East, Md.
Yes. Longtime puppeteers and TV show producers Sid Krofft, 83, and his brother Marty, 75, are currently producing a movie version of their 1969-1971 Saturday-morning hit, H.R. Pufnstuf, a rather bizarre, almost psychedelic concoction of strange-looking puppets and actors on a TV soundstage. ”Do you know who expressed interest in playing Witchiepoo?” asks Sid. ”Johnny Depp! I think he’d be wonderful.” The Kroffts, both natives of Montreal, Canada, live today in Los Angeles. Sid, a puppeteer since childhood, is writing his memoirs, which will feature such stories as opening for Judy Garland onstage in the 1950s.
