The Omaha, Neb., native, who moved around quite a bit because her father was in the U.S. Air Force, made her career choice in a high school drama class. Her first TV appearance came when she was 17 on an episode of “The Donna Reed Show.” “I felt as if I could connect with people through this medium that I couldn’t just being Swoosie,” says Kurtz, 68, who today plays Joyce Flynn on “Mike & Molly.” “I was very shy. Still am. I can go on stage and perform, but one-on-one in a social situation, I get nervous.”
