Mel Gibson gives a bravura performance as a once-successful business exec whose life has become a train wreck due to his ever-deepening depression. Then he finds a beaver hand puppet—which facilitates a surprising turnaround. Jody Foster (who also directed) plays his long-suffering wife, trying her best to make sense of the raggedy rodent that takes over her husband’s personality. It’s quirky, darkly humorous and sometimes wincingly raw, but Gibson gives it an emotional power that overrides its oddity. Bonus features include commentary by Foster and a making-of documentary.
