Just about everything about this highly acclaimed 1950s-era period drama was a magnet for award nominations—the lead performances by Philip Seymour Hoffman and Joaquin Phoenix, the direction of Paul Thomas Anderson, the supporting role of Amy Adams. But what everyone who saw it really wondered—and what you’ll wonder, too—is something you can’t quite see, rendered so exquisitely, up on the screen: Is its riveting story of a manipulative, charismatic “movement” leader (Hoffman) and the troubled young WWII vet and drifter (Phoenix) he takes under his wing really about the origins of L.
