The Westfield, N.J., native, 49, is as much a success as a writer as he is actor and has twice won the Lowell Thomas Award for his travel writing. His memoir, “The Longest Way Home: One Man’s Quest for the Courage to Settle Down,” scheduled for release this month, explores his lifelong struggles with love, fear and commitment. “Travel changed my life,” he says. “I found out who I was by traveling. I stopped being afraid in the world because I traveled.” An editor-at-large for National Geographic Traveler, he also continues to actor and direct.
