The Brooklyn native died in 1982 at the age of 64. Drake got his start on stage at the age of 20 in Clean Beds in 1938, and his first feature film role was in 1940's Howards of Virginia. He was active in feature films and guest-starred in television series for nearly four decades, though his most notable roles were in Meet Me in St. Louis and The Green Years. Drake's dozens of television appearances included guest roles on Perry Mason, The Wild, Wild West, and Marcus Welby, M.D.
