Tommy Rettig played Mitchum’s character’s son in that 1954 Western, but he’s best remembered in another role: as Jeff Miller in the first three seasons of Lassie (1954-1957). Rettig made more than a dozen films before the TV series made him a household name. For the last years of his life, he was a successful computer software developer. Rettig died in 1996 at 54 of a heart attack.
