Did actor Tony Curtis ever serve on a submarine during World War II?
—Jack Halferty, Sutherlin, Ore.

Curtis, born Bernard Schwartz in New York, served in the U.S. Navy during World War II on a submarine tender, a craft that services and supplies submarines. One of his shipmates was another Hollywood star-to-be, Larry (F-Troop) Storch. Fun facts: Curtis, 82, the father of actress Jamie Leigh Curtis, is one of the figures on the cover of the Beatles’ classic Sgt. Peppers’ Lonely Hearts Club Band album and was the voice of dashing Stoney Curtis in The Flintstones TV series.
