Greta Garbo was born Greta Lovisa Gustafsson in Stockholm, Sweden. She made two Swedish films and a German movie before heading to Hollywood in 1925, where she quickly became an international star in silent and talking pictures, starring in two dozen American films and winning four Academy Award nominations. Among her hits were “Flesh and the Devil,” “Anna Karenina,” “Camille,” “Ninotchka,” “Mata Hari” and “Grand Hotel.” The actress never married and retired in 1941 at age 36 to live a life of seclusion. Settling in 1953 in a seven-room Manhattan apartment, she died of pneumonia and renal failure in 1990.
