During the 1940s, solar-energy pioneer and engineer George Lof (1913-2009) built in Boulder (pop. 97,385) what often is called the first home with a solar heating system. During the 1950s, he built a second solar home in Denver and, in the 1970s, helped build a solar village at Colorado State University in Fort Collins. Lof was born in Aspen (pop. 6,658).
