Joyce DeWitt shined on the small screen during her 1977 to 1984 run as Janet Wood on the ABC sitcom Three’s Company. Now, 30 years later, many wonder What ever happened to Joyce DeWitt? After starring in 172 episodes of Three’s Company, the West Virginia-born DeWitt stepped into small roles in various TV shows including the short lived Finder of Lost Loves before taking a break from acting.

DeWitt, who obtained a master’s degree in theater from the University of California Los Angeles, returned to acting in the 1991 stage production of Noises Off at Michigan’s Cherry County Playhouse. She eventually made it back onto the TV screen in her 1995 made-for-TV movie Spring Fling! For the next few years DeWitt made cameo appearances on TV shows including Hope Island and 18, and as a voice actress in the animated show Pinky and the Brain.

Dewitt appeared in The Nick at Nite Holiday Special in 2003 playing “the housekeeper” of a lodge where celebrities, including Vince Gill and Sarah McLachlan, kept turning up for refuge from “the blizzard of the century.” Also in 2003, the actress co-produced the NBC made-for-TV movie Behind the Camera: The Unauthorized Story of Three’s Company.

The film, which featured Melanie Paxson as Joyce DeWitt, focused on behind the scenes aspects of Three’s Company including tension between the producers of the show and Suzanne Somers. Somers and DeWitt reportedly did not speak from the time Somers left the show in 1981 until 2012, due to a feud over their salaries. The pair eventually reunited on an episode of Somers’ web show Breaking Through and discussed their past and the events they went through during and after Three’s Company.

On July 4, 2009, Dewitt was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol in El Sedundo, Calif. The actress later pleaded “no contest” and was sentenced to three years probation and required to take an alcohol education class. Since then DeWitt has appeared in the New York stage production of “Miss Abigail’s Guide to Dating, Mating and Marriage,” the indie film “Failing Better,” and is in post-production for a 2014 movie for the USA network. Joyce will turn 65 on April 29, 2014.
