Lupino was born in London into a family of entertainers. She made nearly 60 films between 1931 and 1978, including They Drive by Night, High Sierra, The Sea Wolf, The Hard Way and Junior Bonner, and she was a guest on nearly 60 TV series. One of Hollywood’s pioneer female directors, she helmed seven movies, including The Hitch-Hiker in 1953, recognized as the first film noir directed by a woman. Lupino died in 1995 at 77 from a stroke while being treated for cancer.
