The High School Musical star has several projects in the works, including the upcoming romantic drama, The Lucky One, set for theatrical release April 20, in which he plays a Marine who returns from his third tour of duty in Iraq with a keepsake that he credits with saving his life—a picture he found of a woman he doesn’t know.
Recently, Efron, 24, starred in New Year’s Eve, and in March, he could be heard but not seen in the animated movie Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax, the story of an idealistic young boy who sets out to find the one thing that will win him the affection of the girl of his dreams: a real tree.
“I have always been searching for a way to get more involved [with the environment],” Efron says. “This movie with its message felt like a really organic way to help. This is a way, through film, to get the message out to young kids. As they say in the movie, it only takes one seed, so we are planting those seeds.”
And later this year, Efron stars with Matthew McConaughey, Nicole Kidman and John Cusack in The Paperboy, tentatively scheduled for a November release. It is about a reporter (McConaughey) who returns to his hometown to investigate the events surrounding a murder in order to free a man on death row.
